The Epica Final Conference

The EPICA Final Conference was held in Zoom on December 10, 2020. With 1,000 participants registered for the event, during the nearly 2 hours conference, there were eight contributions from the different EPICA partners that raised an incredible interest amongst the audience. The programme of the conference was able to show the main processes and outcomes achieved during the three years lifespan of the project.

EPICA in OEB 2020

EPICA will be presented virtually at OEB, the global, cross-sector conference on technology supported learning and training, on Friday, December 4 at 14:30 Hrs GMT+1

EPICA will be represented by the Open University of Catalunya, UOC, based in Spain, and responsible of the EPICA methodology to recognize and make the employability skills visible through the EPICA ePortfolio.

Their presentation will describe how to showcase students' employability skills through a competency-based ePortfolio and a specific methodology designed to enhance its use. The strenghts of the solution will be described along with the opportunities provided by the award of digital micro-credentials. Concrete hints for its implementation in HE institutions and its successful use will be also shared with the audience.

6th EPICA Consortium Meeting

Virtual meeting

The ongoing Covid-19 pandemic forced the EPICA partners to postpone the consortium meeting that was originally planned to be held in July 2020 in Nairobi, Kenya to October and finally to convene virtually due to restrictions imposed on international travel and meetings.

5th EPICA Consortium Meeting

22–23 January 2020
Kampala, Uganda

On the 22nd of January 2020 the entire EPICA Consortium gathered in Kampala, Uganda for the 5th partner meeting of the project.

EPICA is a strategic partnership between Europe and Africa. The objective of the project is to bring together businesses, organisations and universities in both Europe and Africa by designing an innovative, scalable ePortfolio, which will improve the quality, visibility and availability of new skills.

A poster on EPICA presented at the #CRISSsymposium

Heraklion, Greece

EPICA was presented in a poster session during the "CRISS H2020 Symposium on Acquiring Digital Competence in the classroom - the experience of primary and secondary schools in Europe". The event was organized by the CRISS project and took place in Heraklion (Greece) on November 14th.

EPICA Project Team's participation at eLearning Africa 2019, the Pan-African Conference & Exhibition on ICT for Education, Training & Skills Development

23–25 October 2019
Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire

The 14th eLearning Africa 2019 Conference was held in Abidjan, Côte D' Ivoire as from 23rd – 25th October 2019 at the Sofitel Abidjan Ivoire Hotel. EPICA project was allocated a stand/booth by the organisers at the entrance of the Auditorium where the main events such as the Plenary sessions and the eLearning Africa Debate took place. The EPICA project team was represented during this year's eLearning Africa by the following partners; Jean-Baptiste Milon (ICDE), Snorre Qveim (ICDE), Michael Opiyoh (MU), Richard Kajumbula (MAK) and Edephonce Nfuka (OUT).

4th EPICA Consortium Meeting

10 – 11 July 2019
Barcelona, Spain

The UOC (Open University of Catalonia) hosted the fourth international meeting of the EPICA Initiative H2020 project on 10 – 11 July 2019. This meeting focused on the Strategic Association for the co-design of an innovative and scalable ePortfolio ecosystem to improve the quality and visibility of skills. This effort is a new step in this strategic alliance between Africa and Europe to make the skills of students in the labour market more visible. The first day meeting was held at the UOC Tibidabo headquarters

3rd EPICA Consortium Meeting

10 – 11 December 2018
Berlin, Germany

The 3rd EPICA Consortium Meeting took place in the Hotel Seminaris, in the German city of Potsdam, nearby Berlin, in December 10-11, 2018. The meeting was organised by ICWE, Germany. It was attended by representatives from all partner organisations of the consortium: ICDE (NO), MyDocumenta (ES), Open University of Tanzania (TZ), Maseno University (KE), Makerere University (UG), Open University of Catalonia (ES), the African Virtual University (KE) and ICWE (GE).

EPICA at OEB 2018, the leading conference & exhibition on technology-supported learning and training

Earlier this December, we had the pleasure of presenting the EPICA Initiative in Berlin to 2000+ attendees of the OEB Global & Learning Technologies Conference. OEB Global is the leading international conference & exhibition on technology-supported learning and training for the public, corporate and academic sectors. Each year, learning enthusiasts from more than 80 countries gather in Berlin to discuss the future of learning. The overall theme this year was ‘Learning to Love Learning’. It was a privilege to have the opportunity to present EPICA to such a high-level expert audience.

eLearning Africa

26 – 28 September 2018
Kigali, Rwanda

eLearning Africa 2018 in Kigali, Rwanda devoted one of its Knowledge Exchange Sessions to the EPICA initiative. Participants joined the session to learn how EPICA's competency-based ePortfolio will be able to transform the prospects of African workers in increasingly competitive markets.

Second Consortium Meeting

12 – 13 July 2018
Naura Springs, Arusha

The Open University of Tanzania (OUT) has hosted the second Consortium Meeting of H2020 EPICA project (Strategic partnership for the co-design of an innovative and scalable ePortfolio ecosystem to improve the quality and visibility of skills). In his opening remarks, Prof. Elifas Bisanda, Vice chancellor of The Open University of Tanzania, emphasized the importance of employing an ePortfolio as a tool to enable East African university graduates to demonstrate their skills and competencies.

Maseno University (MU) – Open Day

27 April 2018
Maseno, Kenya

EPICA held its third Open Day event at Maseno University on April 27th at the Kisumu Hotel's Oseno Hall. Dr. Benson Nyambega, Director of Research, Publication & Innovation, welcomed over 40 local stakeholders on behalf of Prof. Chacha, the Deputy Vice Chancellor of Partnerships, Research & Innovation.

The Open University of Tanzania (OUT) – Open Day

Another milestone for EPICA was the Open Day event at Dar es Salaam's Open University of Tanzania (OUT). Dr. Edephonce Nfuka, EPICA Coordinator and Director of the Institute of Educational and Management Technologies, introduced the project to a full council chamber of stakeholders from the public, business and academic sector.

Makerere University (MAK) – Open Day

12 April 2018
Kampala, Uganda

EPICA received a warm welcome at Makerere University's Open Day on April 12th. At the half-day event, approximately 50 people came to learn about and discuss EPICA's ePortfolio strategy. Those in attendance had been previously identified as key stakeholders of EPICA's central goal: to bridge the pervasive skills gap. Among these stakeholders were professionals from the business sector, such as the Federation of Uganda Employers, the Uganda Manufacturers Association, as well as attendees from the Ministry of ICT & National Guidance, and the wider academic sector.

EPICA Kick-Off Meeting

28 – 31 January 2018
Hunderfossen, Norway

The EPICA Kick-Off Meeting took place from the 28 – 31 January, 2018 in Hunderfossen, Norway and was organised by the project coordinator, the International Council for Open and Distance Education (ICDE), Norway.

It was attended by representatives of the partner organisations involved in the project: ICDE (coordinator),African Virtual University, ICWE, Makerere University, MyDocumenta, Open University of Catalonia and The Open University of Tanzania.

EPICA Country Specific Events

During the three year span of the EPICA initiative, the three partnering Universities; Open University Tanzania, Makere University and Maseno University, will each organise two country-specific events in Tanzania, Uganda and Kenya. The first events will take place at the beginning of the project, providing each University the opportunity to present the project to local stakeholders (academic, industry, policy makers, etc.) to raise awareness and engagement. The later will be held at the end of the project, to promote adoption and implementation of the results among the end-users.
